Welcoming this cute little bit of “Havoc” into my life. He’s sired by my most wonderful boy Loki (CH Embee’s Mischief Managed, ROM), who will be 14 in June. Loki represents many years of wonderful long lived dogs behind him and like his relatives, he himself has been so incredibly healthy his entire life. He was one of the early dogs MRI scanned here that had no chiari malformation or no syringomyelia. His repeat scan done at 6.5 showed the same. When he was 8.5 years old, Loki developed Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or more commonly known as an enlarged prostate. His semen was showing changes typical of older Cavaliers. Sadly they don’t keep their fertility as long as some other breeds. The easiest treatment for BPH is neutering, and so the choice was made.
So how did I get Havoc if Loki has been neutered for the last 6 years? He comes from a long planned breeding using frozen semen that was collected and frozen from Loki about 11 years ago. Thank you to Dr. Rasa Levstein and Graham Animal Hospital for all their expertise in frozen. It really is amazing what frozen semen can offer to preservation breeders. For me, it’s a safe line to go back to on a dog that I truly do have the health history and know inside and out. Using frozen semen is very expensive and requires some foresight to collect them when they are younger, however, now that he is about to celebrate his 14th birthday, I sure wish I had several more breeding units saved.
When I shared frozen bits of Loki with Kim and Sue, the only thing I had asked for was the opportunity to have a puppy back from it if there was something to share. I couldn’t be more grateful to Kim Legerretta and Sue Gray (Kolaci Cavaliers) for fulling the most wonderful promise to me, in red. I have my fingers and toes crossed that he develops in the way we hope. So far, he’s everything I love in a Cavalier. He’s very sweet and smart, with a touch of that fiery sass that I adore. He’s fitting in here exactly how he should.
